His and Ike’s relationship is less clearly strained, and more distant. He probably doesn’t even realise how much Ike keeps him at arms length. He has that strong dad energy, often making jokes, but they can be at the expense of others. Many people might not see the issues that Ike has with his dad at first, but every once and a while he lets some joke through that is incredibly insensitive or hurtful.
As a team, his parents are very good at being passive aggressive or insensitive, frequently saying things that belittle other forms of living as a way of discouraging Ike from taking the path he has taken. See his monk path as wasted potential, and are not afraid to share it with the cover of jokes and the classic line “we just say it because we care about you!”
