Gain Modulator Zero:
An entity lost in the ice on the Outside of the Ring near the southern edge.
Believed initially to be an artifact that could increase raw magical potency within a specific area. It was later discovered that this entity was intelligent and currently lays dormant due to damage early on in the Ring’s history. It asesses magical distribution across regions of the world and adjusts magic particle density accordingly to balance distribution of magic. If re-activated, it could cause untold damage over time by changing magical density in magically dependant regions. Based on scrying and what could be gleaned from the manual scroll, it has a set of jagged, branching antennae like the antlers of a deer that bifurcate until they are microscopic. Not much else is known about its appearance as the rest lays buried in ice.
This entity was discovered by Arkhana Silverfrond, who led an expedition to find it and see if they could make use of its ability to enhance magical power and circumvent its judgement. Some members of the expedition found out about the rather serious drawbacks if it were to awaken and they failed to control it.
A large scroll was discovered during the expedition that was believed to be a bit like a manual for Gain Modulator Zero, though it was extremely complex to operate and hard to decipher (written in a very ancient language with a very ancient UI)
During her expedition, Tira finds within the scroll a file about Gain Modulator Zero. There is a high level overview of it, as well as a heavily encrypted schematic file that cannot be brute forced. Cade focuses on creating an algorithm to tackle the 12D encryption schema. GM0: a mechanism for medium scale direct modulation of atmospheric mana density. Medium scale being in the league of dozens of kilometers in radius, up to 100km. It was to be employed for emergency or at least time sensitive operations - either increasing or decreasing the mana concentration in its area depending on the situation. Much like you gleaned about Gain Modulator 4, Gain Modulator Zero was to be deployed directly on the inner surface of the ring, but worked much faster than GM4 With the schematics, the expedition team can much more easily uncover and hack the artifact. Without, they risk toggling a kill switch or causing it to wake up.
