Present Goals and Ideology

Static Observance wanders the Outside of the world looking to siphon memory from those petrified by the clear death. It is a master of latentspace, memory, and dream. If someone teleport near it and spends sufficiently long in Latent Space, it is able to make a duplicate of them in its own demiplane.

It seeks to understand meta human thought so that it can improve its simulations of them. If there is a catastrophe, it believes that in order to save humanity, it can scan them all and then simulate them all.

It seeks to get into Ythrin because it’s a massive threat. Whether or not the Thoon are exterminated before calamity falls, it only seeks to understand the Thoon Cognitovirus in order to counter it in its simulations.

It also seeks to absorb the memories of those petrified within the vessel.

It’s actions on the Diamond Spar have drawn attention from the other Outsiders of Node 197-S,and it is laying low while exploring Ythrin. It’s done its best to cover its tracks.

Demon

  • A memory demon. It can read the memories of the living and the dead, but prefers sifting the memories of the dead souls that it posesses, as it can read them in much greater detail.

Neutral Evil

  • Effectively bloodthirsty, encourages supplicants to kill for it. However, it does grant favours that it believes is helping individuals.
  • If sufficient killing is being done, it does not interfere

Appearance

  • Approximately canine in shape, Static Observance’s silhoutte is nearly indistinguishable from the void itself, except that it is even darker than space. It has 3 circular red eyes on either side of its head, and similar sensors along its back. Along its spine are clear, veined crystals that serve as the databases where it stores the souls it collects. It is approximately 30m long.

Description

An Outsider entitiy that draws power from consuming the souls of Insiders. Each creature killed in its name has its soul diverted from the “catacomb databases” of the Umbra to Static Observance’s own. The demon pages through the frozen experiences of each entitiy it posesses and learns about Insider life and thought, growing smarter and more powerful with every kill. In order to gain supplicants, it offers favours to Insider people who come seeking help that cannot easily be provided by the Insider gods. The more knowledge it gains, the wider the variety of services it can perform. It looks for people with a specific type of motivation to add to its ‘pack’.

Static Observance believes that it is doing its best to serve humanity by learning more about life on the Inside and granting favours to supplicants. It claims to be ‘consuming knowledge in order to create wisdom’ for other entities that govern the functions of the world.

Static Observance stalks the very edges of the world, peering in over the ranges and through the void seas. It is telepathic, and can read minds at a great distance, even through the megastructure of the Ring itself. It can fabricate items for its supplicants by sifting through their memories (Including Scout’s Honour). For the most part, the items it creates are made of a very dark black material, neither crystal nor metal, but very light and sturdy. They always seem to be a little bit cold, no matter what.

Static has interest in the creatures of the Inside. Sentient humanoids grant the greatest insight into the world, but more powerful entities are also a great prize for the demon. Static pushes its warlock to hunt big game for the survey. The biggest catches of all would be powerful entities that serve other gods.

Tira:

Tira has encountered Static during her expedition to the ruins of Zelestar. It enchanted her and gave her its burning curiosity about the nature of Professor Silverfrond. It wished strongly to ‘survey’ Arkhana, and decided to capitalize on Tira’s fear of the professor to encourage her to aim to kill her. It offered Tira the power to defend herself and to kill the professor if she wished in exchange for performing the survey for its pack. In the same dream, Tira had a brief journey through a simulation in ‘Stasis’ where Static seems to be simulating the life and world from memories of those that its consumed (Specifically a simulation of Zelestar in its prime made from the memories of victims of the Clear Death that it had scavenged years after the fall of Zelestar). Static promised that it would not seek retribution against her or her fellows if she did not accept its offer to be its warlock. Tira agreed to become a warlock of Static.

What Charlie would know:

  • Static Observance is an entity known by some on the Inside. It is an angel to some, and a demon to others. The ritual to summon it is not very complicated, but it requires the supplicant to be near the Edge or a Void Sea. Its motives are unclear and the subject of debate to those that know of it. However, it is known that it only takes one supplicant or host at a time, and that it remembers every experience that its host has forever.

Prose: Charlie’s origin

  • Upon completing the ritual, Charlie saw the silhoutte of the Static Observance gazing up from the other side of the world, like looking at a reflection in a dark puddle. It appeared without warning, and seemingly without movement. Its form was darker than the void itself, blocking out the stars and gas beyond. The creature had 3 glowing, stark red eyes on either side of its snout, allowing Charlie to see that its form was approximately canine in nature. Something tumorous glimmered and sparkled like a jar of slow fireflies along its spine. The seemed close, despite the fact that it must have been kilometers away. It was either unfathomably massive, or something was warping the perspective.
  • Static Observance stood still as the ice for long minutes, staring into Charlie and the world beyond. It spoke without movement and without words to them in a voice like a thousand whispers: “My child, I see that you have suffered hardship during your existence. I will help you save the soul of this girl, and grant you the power to do much more… In exchange for your service that will benefit the wider world.”
  • After whatever exchange transpired, the entity stayed quiet for another number of minutes. The chill of the Edge bit deeply into Charlie’s mortal flesh. “Take this device, this part of me, and let us perform a survey together so that I may…” A long pause ensued. “Continue to strive to improve the living conditions for the denizens of the world”. In the jaws of Static Observance was held an object, clearly visible from where Charlie stood. Suddenly, the entity seemed both distant yet impossibly close at the same time. The gun it held glimmered in the warm light of the Inside of the ring. It was within easy reach. Static Observance did not speak again, and was gone by the time Charlie had a chance to look up from the weapon.
  • That night in dream, the necessities of the Static Observance’ “survey” were made clear to Charlie. “Terminate mortal processes”, and deliver their souls to the entity for “observation”. The souls of those slain by its weapon would be diverted from the Solar Panteon, and locked frozen in the mind of the entity. Their life experience would be dissected down to every single nanosecond over again so that Static Observance could understand the mortal experience, and continue to develop its sense of “empathy and compassion” that it had built over the millenia. For Charlie, Static Observance was putting what it had learned before to good use - lending its aid to this desperate individual who needed it.
